The raven perched upon a branch, rustling its wings loudly as it glanced sidelong at me with an eye that glinted like polished jet. Then, without warning, it let loose a raucous caw that made me startle in my skin, perhaps displeased by the arrival of its new neighbour.
Sorry to intrude, I thought wryly, but make no mistake—this place is now mine.
